Capital of the Congo, industrial port
(foundries, railway repairs, shipbuilding,
shoes, soap, furniture, bricks) on the river
Zaire, opposite Kinshasa; population (1984)
595,000. There is a cathedral 1892 and the
Pasteur Institute 1908. It stands on Pool
Malebo (Stanley Pool). Brazzaville was
founded by the Italian Count Pierre Savorgnan
de Brazza (1852-1905), employed in African
expeditions by the French government. It was
the African headquarters of the Free (later
Fighting) French during World War II.
